Homemade Jadeite Napkin Holder

I love Jadeite but don’t like the prices of the old stuff.  I have no problem with buying the reproductions since it’s the color I like more than the value of the old pieces.  I don’t even mind a plastic reproduction just to get that color.

For that reason I decided to paint a plastic napkin holder.  I got mine at Walmart for under $3 but I think I also saw one at the Dollar Store and you know how much it would be there.

I decided to use acrylic craft paint knowing that it can chip off easily but my napkin holder won’t need to be washed often.  (I don’t have any children at home.)  When it does need to be washed, I can just paint it again.

Here is the napkin holder with just the bottom painted:

I painted the underside so that the part that shows is the shiny plastic with the paint showing through.  You can see how I painted the inside of the sides; again so that the shiny plastic is outside with the paint showing through.

Here it is all done with some of my collection of reproduction jadeite.

What do you think?  What color would you paint yours?

  1. I love it! I would do mine in green, like you, or orange. I think I need to go to the dollar store now.....

  3. Hey, Cindy, this is really beautiful. I love how it gives a jade-y effect. I think, i would have either gone for a pale rose pink or green, just the shade you have used. Good one :)

  5. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving an encouraging comment. I love meeting new bloggers. Amazing, I love jadeite, too! I was just amazed that you had such a rare piece, then read further. That is just too clever! I found a box of Jadeite on Craig's List for $40, so have a few pieces, but since I have children at home, I haven't used them much. I do love the color, though!

  6. That's amazing! I love jadeite, so came to your link first from Freckled Laundry. I enlarged the picture, but couldn't see the color name on the paint. Is it just an apple green, or is there a specific name for it?

    Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

  7. Marilyn, It's Spring Green - Anita's Acrylic. I meant to mix in a little white so that it would match my reproduction jadeite more closely, but forgot. I still love it though.

  8. I've been searching all over for a napkin holder to match my Jadeite salt & pepper shakers. I love Jadeite, but alas, I am poor ;-) What an amazing idea! I already have the plastic napkin holder and will be heading to the store to get the paint. Thank you so much for sharing your great idea!
